Behind the Track
I wrote "Rap Game" when I was 19 years old.
Initially, the song came from being upset with a friend who felt I was betraying him by making music without him. It started as a diss track, but as I kept writing, it became much more than that.
I also mixed in my feelings toward the music industry—how so many songs sounded the same, just different artists and different hooks, while the lyrics often felt copied.
The subtext of the song is really about my own life and emotional state at the time, mixed with the fantasy of being a ninja. I was carrying a lot of anger and emotion, and I think that's why the song translates in such a dark way.
Looking back, I don't hear just a song.
I hear a 19-year-old version of myself.
